People want to return to the same establishments. However, I sometimes see that I’m not treated the same as other, Spanish speaking, clients. Could it be because of my foreign features and they think I don’t speak Spanish? And I think that many people in small businesses don’t have the infrastructure to have language training to deal with an English speaking public. So, here is my grain of salt instead of complaining. That is how this project came to be. I See Culture does not have the same obstacles as other learning institutions, as we have a first rate reservation system, and a different type of organization. As a first step we agreed that the best course of action would be for each establishment to be informed and sign up individually, and that the process not take up the association’s resources. This web site was created, which included an explicative video, brochure, means of contact in order to get more information, as well as a direct link to a level test. In one quick telephone message, each member of the association had the ability to be informed and sign up.

Agreements to be made.

The concept is for the members to have easy access to training, short term accessible goals, and a means of making this work to their benefit. An “English Friendly” window display (sticker) to attract new clients.

Practical translations

It takes a long time to learn a language, there is no getting around that. However, short-term, you can offer healthy communication. Think of your typical sentences, or necessary sentences to initiate a happy transaction. It’s not just the menus, we are speaking of employee manuals, signage in the shop… our imagination is the limit. Learning to use the right tools (transcription, translation), say a few nice words… this small effort can go a long way. Oh, and of course, we’ve all seen the poorly translated menus, having a translator you can trust… can avoid a few misunderstandings!

Practical role-play

There are a few basic guidelines to go over, practical material to take home, and practice, practice, practice. The trick is that the everybody involved has the same goal and there are no fixed timetables. Our teachers are experts at guiding you through necessary practice, with the corrections when necessary, not forgetting encouragement and laughs. It’s not that difficult to communicate once you have more confidence, we aren’t looking for perfection, we are looking for happy customers!

Freedom of timetable is key

We know that you must attend to your business first. After all, that is probably the reason why we are here, no? With our reservation system, you can make last minute reservations or cancellations, you will be notified in advance and just before your class as a friendly reminder of your class. You may reserve the same timetable, but it’s not necessary. Do you have a time that is a bit quieter in the shop? Can you take advantage of a break? Perfect, we are here for you. The sessions are online, if you have a tablet, laptop, or even a phone, you can join!
